Brittany Leo

“Music is the one constant thing in everything I do” says Melbourne based singer-songwriter, dancer, musician and actor Brittany Leo. Growing up surrounded by music, Leo has always loved to sing. Her first foray was singing along to TV commercials when she was very young. This led her to join the school choir and pursue singing lessons. Music is very important to Leo and she listens to it on a daily basis alongside taking singing, guitar, piano and dance lessons. She is also currently completing her VCE.

The Brittany Leo sound is best described by the girl herself, she says “my sound is modern pop rock with some electronic dance influences mixed in”. This mash up of genres is influenced predominantly by The Pretty Reckless, Usher and Kelly Clarkson. It is particularly the strong emotions and feeling of empowerment that Clarkson is known for that Leo draws on in her own song writing. Her debut single Saving Myself from her recently completed EP is testament to that. It is a powerful pop rock ballad that combines Leo’s evocative vocals with driving guitars and drums that make it instantly infectious. It is currently being promoted to worldwide radio through Musik and Film Radio Promotions in the US. The EP itself is very much a journey. She says “each song has a different story, but they all focus on strong feelings related to relationships and life experiences”. Leo co-wrote the EP with singer-songwriter Michael Paynter (whom she was introduced to via a contact at her singing school) and Michael DeLorenzis of MSquared Productions.

At just 17 years old, Leo has already achieved so much in her music career. She has performed at countless events across Melbourne including the BMW Edge and The Royal Exhibition Building amongst others. Her most memorable career highlight to date is a performance at The Palladium at Crown Casino. She remarks “it is such a beautiful venue and there were a lot of television and sporting personalities at the event”. Leo has also performed at many charity events and had the privilege to work with some amazing organisations. Leo considers these all memorable for the fact that she has been able to support some incredible people. Of all the venues she’s already played, one that she would like to play in the future is Rod Laver Arena. Leo is currently completing her Year 12 studies and after that she will be heading into the recording studio to record some brand new material.

Ever since I can remember I've wanted to be a music journalist. Plenty of people I say this to try to tell me that such a job doesn't exist. I aim to prove them wrong and continually aspire to be the best music journalist I can be.

I completed a Master of Journalism at the University of Melbourne last year and now I'm 100% focussed on becoming a music journalist, in saying that though I'll be the most untraditional of journalists. I write the way I speak and I like it that way. I hope to showcase independent/unsigned Aussie & sometimes international bands and artists.

In saying that though, I'd also love the opportunity to speak with acts signed to the majors too. The dream is to interview the bands who mean the world to me, for their music and everything they stand for as well as who they are as people - Fall Out Boy and Mallory Knox! It will happen one day, I truly believe that!
